August 2026 Amber Grant Awarded to Mobile Tailor LA

We’re excited to announce the August $10,000 Amber Grant recipient. Congratulations to Carla Morán, founder of Mobile Tailor LA.

Jama: Today we’re speaking with Carla. She is our August Amber Grant winner. Thank you so much for being with us today. We are so excited to learn more about Mobile Tailor LA. Please tell us a little bit about your business and who or what inspired your business.

Carla: So it is Mobile Tailor LA. I earned my BFA in fashion design in 2009, when all of our apparel industry was moved. It was offshored. So it was really tough getting into the business, but, believe it or not, people were seeking me out. I was the daughter of so-and-so who knew how to sew. And I started making alterations for people that way, or custom dresses.

During COVID, I also served a lot of brides that needed their wedding gowns tailored. And I was actually quite surprised that they were okay with coming to my apartment. I have 20-plus years in the apparel industry, working as a technical designer and pattern maker. All of those experiences, including working retail, have really molded me to be the person that I am today.

I finally accepted that I’m an entrepreneur at heart. And I launched Mobile Tailor LA officially this year, 2026. 

In March, I was working on the website and living in that dream world of, “What does it look like? Okay, well, what if this happens? What if that happens? How do I prepare for those scenarios?”

In April, I launched. I made $240 working as a solopreneur. Fast-forward to August, we made almost $16,000 in that one month, which is huge for me! I’ve grown my team. In that span, it happened so fast. Once I saw, “Okay, LA loves Mobile Tailor LA. It is a thing,” now I can go back and clean house, so to speak. And so I just formed the LLC and got my EIN number.

I wanted to test the business model first before investing all of that money upfront. Like I said, I designed my own website in Wix because I was a solopreneur and testing an idea. So why spend a bunch of money upfront if it’s not going to work, right?

So, Mobile Tailor LA is expert alterations and tailoring. We go to our customers in Los Angeles. We are located in the San Fernando Valley, so we love serving our immediate neighbors. And every time they find us, we’re really excited because it’s fewer miles to travel to them. 

But the idea is to offer a concierge service where we go to them. We tailor them in their home, their office, or their hotel room, and give them that personalized experience without the added distraction of a dry-cleaning business or other patrons also being fitted in a teeny-tiny space. They’re already home. They feel comfortable. They love the convenience of not hassling with traffic and the time to drive to a tailor and find parking.

I just wanted to keep it easy and really just serve busy Angelenos. It’s such a big city. We are all busy. We’re all working. We’re all battling that traffic. So this was just a really nice way to package it up, give them that personalized service.

They love our quality. They love our efficiency, our speedy service. Los Angeles has really embraced Mobile Tailor LA with open arms. I’m happy and excited about what’s to come.

Jama: Well, we’re very excited too. Finding a good tailor is so special because when you find a good tailor, they know how you want something to fit. They get it. They know how to make your clothes really decorate your body beautifully. You’re in an industry that has such a special skill, and then the mobile piece of it is just amazing. I wish there were more Mobile Tailor LAs all around the United States. We’re so excited to see how you’re going to continue to grow.
